How to host my own website with a server?

confused|website hosting providers A frequently-asked query:

I want to start a website that can cater high bandwidth requirement. I have been told that I will need a server as most web hosts won’t allow high bandwidth. My website will hopefully be as big as youtube. So the server must be capable of high bandwidth so users can upload movies and pics. What server should I buy to start off with?

Will I need to buy my own IP address? Can someone point me in the right direction, I’m a total novice when it comes to servers. I know my website will be a huge hit! I need to know where I can get some advice on servers. Hope you can help.

confused|website hosting providers Answer:

Websites that need huge amount of bandwidth and huge amount of webspace can cater business or executive hosting plans. Websites that receive huge amount of traffic everyday can opt to use either dedicated server hosting or a vps hosting. VPS hosting is cheaper than a dedicated server hosting. However, lots of users prefer to used a dedicated server hosting. Here are the reasons why:

  • Provide complete freedom, more power, greater stability and flexibility than shared or VPS hosting
  • Higher level of performance compared to shared or VPS hosting
  • Root access gives you total control of the serve.
  • Receive priority support with fully managed solutions
  • Best for resource intensive websites with large volumes of traffic
  • Higher level of security

However, dedicated servers are more pricey than a VPS as you would have to bear the cost of the entire server. Superior performance and more stability come at a higher price. Furthermore, it simply shows “you only get what you pay for”.

Let me suggest  HostGator for you. They have Dedicated Servers that is highly capable of hosting your website.

You don’t need to buy your own IP address. It’s very reasonable price with your $139 for the first month you can start it with 10 TB bandwidth which means the users will experienced the biggest bandwidth they wish to have and have storage space that can cater all their uploads. It has a free Site Building tools and templates for a starter like you. They also have awarded with winning technical support which means they are a good web host.

It is better to go for dedicated servers, where you will have only your site in the server compared to shared hosting, where many sites run in same server. Dedicated server packages always come with own IP addresses. One of the top dedicated hosting providers is http://www.theplanet.com/ . But you need more technical knowledge to run a site in dedicated server than in shared server. because you may need to decide on the Operating system to run in server, software to be installed etc. Managed dedicated hosting will reduce your job, since they will install it for you but it can be costlier

Yes you would need a server. You can buy pretty good servers from DELL, just for High Bandwidth and A lot of people visiting your site You well need a couple of servers to be able to handle the load (this is a couple thousand right there).
Now you need a High Speed Connection to be able to take all the users coming to your site. T1 line or something like that would have to be. (Meaning you want your connection to be faster then a lot of high speed connections).
Who knows how much that well cost.
You probably just want to hire somebody to set this all up for you. At least talk to some company about setting up a website. If you don’t know anything about servers I don’t know how you are going to figure this out with just asking questions on yahoo.

Your best choice is managed or virtual servers.
$100/month gives you 2000GB of bandwidth and 320Gb hard drive. Take a look:

Until you actually need the power and flexibility of a server,
start with webhosting: $10/month = 250GB web space and 2500GB bandwidth.
Use 1&1. The business package is on sale for $5.80/month instead of $10. You can change or upgrade (even to a server), whenever you want.
